Decibels on the decibel scale: Generator reviews that take dB into account should also explain what decibels are. The smallest audible sound which is closest to complete silence, is 0 dB. A sound 10 times more powerful is 10 dB. A sound 100 times more powerful than complete silence is 20 dB. A sound 1,000 times more powerful than near total silence is 30 dB, and so on. In general terms here is an example we all can relate to

  • General Conversation comes in around 60 dB
  • Most Lawnmowers are about 90 dB
  • Someone Honks A Car Horn that’s about 110 dB

To keep this simple, we need to understand that a seemingly small increase in the dB scale can actually be a monumental amount of sound.

  • Well, I just learned a very valuable lesson about the Honeywell HW2000i generator. I contacted Honeywell about getting a replacement inverter module and was told that that generator was made / imported by Northshore Power Systems. I contacted Northshore Power Systems and was advised that they only had a list of 24 replacement parts and that the inverter module, the guts to the whole thing, was not on that list. So, the bottom line is that if the inverter module goes out, there is no way to get another one. I guess mine will make a great boat anchor.

If I were Honeywell, I would by back every one of the generators that had a problem that could not be fixed. Honeywell just makes sure that you know that they did not actually make it, even though it bears their name.
